“Provide a free space for African-American students to express themselves .”
Feeling alone and different, unfortunately, is an experience everyone will have at some point in time. Being a school that has a predominantly Hispanic student population, I have felt left out. There are many ways that you may experience being left out. However, if you feel like you don’t serve a purpose at the school, you are needed more than you think.
When I was introduced to the Black Student Union, better known as BSU, I was excited to learn that it was a club dedicated to us. I knew that with this new club opening, there were going to be great opportunities opening for me. We also have an E-Board, which is a board where you will have more responsibilities than just a regular member. E-Board positions consist of the president, fundraiser chair, design team, and others. You are to come to all meetings regarding BSU. Some will collaborate with the student council, but it depends on the topic of the meeting. I am a part of the Fundraising Committee. The fundraising chair ensures that all the money raised on that day is accounted for. We also help decide the certain snacks. The process of choosing snacks is based on what snacks are popular among the students.

BSU consists of a series of meetings about the upcoming trip and or event. We also partner with the Student Council, so that all of our ideas can come together. Some of the trips that we have done are a skating rink field trip to The Momentum of the Skates, an HBCU college fair, and the ITW Leadership Conference. Some of the events we have put together are selling snacks at lunch, a BSU dinner, and student vs staff games. We also have game nights with food. There are many more trips to come. This is an experience I encourage you to attend.
