Throughout JC’s time at Speer, he has proven to be an irreplaceable presence in both the classroom and on the field. His passion for basketball and football has shaped his high school journey. As graduation approaches, it’s clear that JC is ready to make a mark beyond these halls.
In the fall, you would find JC under the Friday night lights as the starting tight end. In the winter, he was on the basketball court “breaking school records and being the 2nd team in speer history to have a winning record.” Originally, he didn’t view basketball as anything more than something “cool,” but now he has dreams of making a name for himself. He picked up football in his sophomore year after his friend Jorge convinced him to join, a decision that became a passion. As an upperclassman, his favorite part is building relationships with the underclassmen who he calls his “little brothers.” Because of these wonderful experiences, JC plans to major in sports management, his ultimate goal is to become a head coach. He wishes to give back to the sports community, as they have given him everything.

If he could give his younger self some advice, he would simply say, “Try harder in school, the work is easy.” And for the underclassmen, “Just be yourself and don’t let anyone take your spark. You’ll fit in by just being yourself.”- JC When asked how he wants to be remembered, he responded, “Someone who tries to have a good time regardless of the situation.”Through it all, Mr.Martinez has had the biggest impact on him during high school. “He has always been an outlet for me and also helped me with problems, he is like a big brother to me.”
Being nominated for Senior Spotlight is something he doesn’t take lightly. “It is an honor to be recognized by my peers,” he said. Outside of athletics and academics, JC also interns with Ms. Shield at YSSI, where he helps set up research equipment that is used to document the recovery process of athletes. He also documents their work on Instagram, gaining hands-on experience and learning professional responsibility along the way.
Given JC’s involvement in our school’s community, I am confident that he will make the most out of his college experience.
