Black Friday is the time to shop around for family and friends. With the holiday approaching, everyone is rushing to buy gifts for their loved ones. Many go to different malls, where deals range from 20% to 80% off, but if everyone is out, how can we keep everyone safe?
It is devastating that as a society we have to question whether anything we do is safe, but with every shooting happening, multiple times a day, even, how can we be sure we won’t be the next victim? This recent black friday, a shooting occurred at Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, CA. There is a suspect in custody, a 17-year-old, who had previously been charged with other gun charges. The 17-year-old supposedly shot a rival gang member, and while doing so, he shot two innocent bystanders. Although it was gang activity, many did not know what happened. Chaos abated, and people rushed to safety. Employees in the mall are rushing to the back, encouraging customers to follow.
With that being said, the question remains: how can events with bigger crowds be safer?
Some tips to keep in mind are to always be aware of your surroundings, charge your phone, locate exits, shop with multiple people, and protect your belongings. When you shop alone, it leaves you vulnerable, but when you shop with other people, there is less of a chance for something to happen to you. Therefore, on Black Friday, in order to be safe, be aware of your surroundings. If something were to happen, you should have an escape route plan. Memorizing different exits in the mall can be an easy way out when you are in danger.
Living in modern-day society, especially in the United States, using these tips can save your life. Even when you least expect something to happen, you should always be prepared, not just on Black Friday, but during all social events with large crowds.
