September 1st – September 7th
Varsity Boys Soccer kicked off the season strong with three wins over Northtown, Mansueto, and Ridgewood, and a tie against DePaul. They faced a conference match against Pritzker and now follow up with a non-conference game against Bulls Prep. Football opened its season with an impressive 8-0 victory over Pritzker on August 30th at Lane Tech. Varsity Girls Volleyball fell to Muchin in two sets, but the JV Girls Volleyball team came out on top, defeating Muchin in two sets. Both teams have a full schedule with three matches each. Varsity will take on Golder, Elmwood Park, and Bulls Prep. JV will go against Elmwood Park, Butler, and Hansberry. Cross Country competed in Rickover’s Inaugural Seadragon Invitational, where the boys team placed 1st, and the girls team took 2nd. Eight runners set new personal records with a strong start to the 2025 season.
September 8th – September 14th
Varsity Boys Soccer lost to Pritzker in conference play (4-3) but beat Bulls in a friendly (8-2). JV Boys Soccer played their first conference game and defeated Muchin (8-0). Football played against Von Steuben for their home opener but lost (18-21). Varsity Girls Volleyball went 1-2 this past week, beating Golder but losing to Elmwood Park and Bulls Prep in 2 sets apiece. JV Girls Volleyball went 2-1, losing to Elmwood Park, but won both of their conference games against Butler and Hansberry. Lastly, Cross Country competed in Lane Tech’s Home Opener, with three male runners placing in the top 30, receiving medals.
September 15th – September 21st
Varsity Boys Soccer went 3-1, winning against Noble Street and Rauner in conference play. As well as winning their match against Boylan. They also lost to Geneseo in the Body Armor Tournament. JV Boys Soccer went (2-0) against UIC in conference play and beat Francis Parker in the Body Armor Tournament. Football played a hard game against Muchin in a rematch of last year’s Championship but fell short, losing (14-26). Varsity Girls Volleyball went (2-0), losing to Noble Street and Mansueto.
September 22nd – September 28th
Varsity Boys Soccer went 2-0, defeating St. Patrick’s in the Body Armor Tournament in penalty kicks and beating Mansueto in conference play. JV Boys Soccer went (2-0) against Acero in the Body Armor Tournament; they also beat Bulls Prep in conference play. Football started conference play with a big win against Phoenix Military Academy. Sadly, varsity girls volleyball lost to Chicago Bulls in conference play but won against UICCP, and now JV girls volleyball will go against Prosser. Girls Rugby kicked off their season with a big win against Bulls Prep. Cross Country was at Lane Tech last Wednesday and had 2 runners finish top 30 in the Varsity runs.
September 29th – October 5th
Varsity Boys Soccer had a strong showing last week, defeating Elmwood Park and tying with Noble Street. JV Boys Soccer unfortunately came up short in both games, losing to Elmwood Park and Mansueto. Football fell short in a tough battle against UICCP, losing 14–34, which brought their conference record to 1–1. Soon, they’ll take on Rauner in a pivotal matchup. Varsity Girls Volleyball had a challenging week with losses to Prosser and Muchin. JV Girls Volleyball fought to victory over Prosser in 3 sets. Cross Country competed at Mather on Tuesday, where three of the runners finished in the top 20 and set new personal records.
October 6th – October 12th
Cross Country competed in the Noble League Championship, with boys taking first and girls taking second. The boys have a winning streak, first in their 7th championship in a row. Varsity Boys Soccer went 3-0, beating Muchin, Rauner, and Chicago Hope, scoring 11 goals over the 3 games. They have clinched the #2 seed in the conference as we head into the playoffs. JV Boys Soccer went 1-1, losing to Pritzker and beating Noble Street, securing 3rd place in the conference. Football faced Rauner in a conference matchup and lost. Varsity Girls Volleyball lost both conference games. Next week, they’ll go against UICCP. JV Girls Volleyball went 1-1 this week, beating Noble Street but losing to Golder. Girls Rugby gets a win due to Hansberry forfeiting the game.
October 13th – October 19th
Cross Country competed at Elmwood Park and did an amazing job representing Speer! Varsity Boys Soccer, unfortunately, lost to Mansueto in the semi-finals. JV Boys Soccer also ended their playoff run in the semi-finals, losing to Pritzker—football, as well, sadly lost against Schurz. For volleyball, Varsity Girls dropped both of its conference games last week, and JV Girls Volleyball went 1–1, winning against UIC but losing to Mansueto.
November 3rd – November 9th
The cross-country team had eight athletes compete at sectionals, and two runners qualified for the IHSA State Series! Seniors Byron Figueroa and Jonathan Diaz made history as the first boys in Speer history to qualify for State in cross country. For Girls Rugby, the team defeated Pritzker, claiming their 5th straight Noble League title! It was an amazing game from the beginning to the end. Moreover, it’s the first rugby game in Noble history to go into “sudden death” after overtime and penalty kicks still left the score tied.
November 10th – November 16th
For boys’ cross country, they finished IHSA State Finals with Byron Figueroa and Jonathan Diaz setting new personal records from their previous times by 40 seconds. Bryon Figueroa, being 16:40.78 and Jonathan Diaz 16:40.83.
