Why are Christopher Nolan movies so good? Nolan has gone out of his way to become one of the greatest directors of all time, with the makings of many movies such as The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, Dunkirk, etc. The reason why Nolan’s movies are such masterpieces is because of the amount of effort put into them. Nolan, since the very beginning of his career, stated that his movies will always have practical effects over CGI for moments specifically because CGI doesn’t give the realism and passion that a full practical effect movie will. When you compare both side to side, you really understand why Nolan has preferred this path over CGI use.. A great example of why he doesn’t prefer to use CGI is that it takes out the realism of the movies behind the screen. As an actor, it’s very hard to imagine something, for example, crawling on you, whereas in Nolan’s projects, he would prefer to use practical effects and a dummy doll to create the most realistic scene in the movie. An example of Nolan’s realism can be seen in Interstellar, where the production team Warner Bros and Syncopy Inc., take a real space jet and act as if it is flying through light-years.
After watching this video, you’ll notice that the set uses little to no green screen, and when watched in the movie, it’s visually appealing to the eye because it really looks as if they were flying down from space into this planet of water. Interstellar is just one of many masterpieces Nolan has worked on in the past years.
Actors
If you’ve watched his movies, you can tell he has a select number of actors whom he chooses to work with in multiple movies. For example, Oppenheimer, who the main character is played by actor Cillian Murphy, had a small role in his old movie, The Dark Knight, as well as actor Christian Bale, who has been in many projects created by Nolan, like The Prestige and The Dark Knight trilogy. It’s unclear why he chooses these actors specifically, perhaps because he only finds these actors to play the perfect role in his movies, but it’s interesting to find that before the movie starts its production, Nolan usually has who he would prefer to play the role already set in his mind.
A new movie that’s yet to be released, directed by Nolan, is called The Odyssey, which, in fact, has a great number of actors, coincidentally, his greatest A-list actor movie ever made, and is in the process of shooting. Many leakers have revealed set photos of this so-called Odyssey movie, and from afar, we could really make out that Nolan is using gigantic sets to make this feel as real as possible.
Recommendation
Another reason his movies have been such a success is because of the number of movies that have failed to use mostly used CGI in their movies and end up looking terrible. For example, if a movie on release gets bad reviews specifically because of the way everything looks incredibly fake, the word will spread, and those who had hope in it will no longer want to watch it. Now, let’s say a movie with good reviews starts to be talked about due to its realism and effort that’s shown in the movie, then that will make it successful in the way Nolan sees it.
Nolan has become one of the greatest directors in today’s date, and his work should be presented as unique due to the amount of talent and passion he puts into his projects. For those of you who have yet to see his work, I recommend that you start with “Interstellar” as its his most visually appealing movie and will help you to see how much of a difference there is compared to regular CGI movies and practical effects.
