How would you feel about only being told part of your history?
Over time, the teaching of black history has worsened.
The lack of teaching Black history in schools today is a serious problem because students aren’t learning the full truth about their history.
Lots of our history doesn’t just include African American students.
There’s lots of history on how other cultures worked with African Americans and helped.
In many schools, Black history is only focused on slavery and or the bad thing.
This leaves out many important Black leaders and achievements that got us to where we are now.
When schools ignore these parts of history, students can end up with wrong ideas and not understand how much Black people have contributed to society.
Schools used to do a better job teaching Black history by actually talking about important people, events, and struggles in a meaningful way.
Students learned more than just a few names or dates.
The teachers took time to explain why Black history mattered to everyone, not just Black students.
Now, it often feels rushed or ignored, like it’s only mentioned during Black History Month and then forgotten.
So I say this to say why?
Why is our history being forgotten?
Is it because of the government or just because of the lack of caring?
But then I go back to the teachers, following what the Board of Education gives them.
At the end of the day, there is always a higher-up than what’s being shown. There may be a higher system that is controlling what teachers are and what they are being told to teach. And unfortunately, I cant control that. All I can do is continue to spread my knowledge of our history with others and hope they do the same.
